Oral Cancer Awareness Month Dental Office Tips and Ideas April 2023

Hello Friends,

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month and Oral, Head, and Neck Cancer Awareness Week is from the 16th– to the 23rd of April – This provides dental offices with an excellent opportunity to raise oral cancer awareness and the need for early detection in order to save lives.

According to the American Cancer Society, over 54,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer this year. An estimated 13,500 people will die of these cancers, killing roughly 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day. The death rate associated with this cancer is particularly high not because it is hard to discover or diagnose, but due to the cancer being routinely discovered late in its development.

While smoking and tobacco use are still major risk factors, the fastest-growing segment of oral cancer patients is young, healthy, nonsmoking individuals due to the connection to the HPV virus. See more: https://oralcancerfoundation.org/facts/

Here are some Oral Cancer Awareness Tips and Ideas to get you started:

  • Hygiene Continuing Care Opportunity: Encourage your inactive patients to come in for their important free oral cancer screening.
  • Partner with a local business to do free oral cancer screenings at their location.
  • Donate a portion of service/product sales (ie: teeth whitening, fluoride, Invisalign) to Oral Cancer Research.
  • Give away Free T-shirts or Bracelets to every patient that makes a donation toward Oral Cancer Research or Just Because.
  • Create a video to share on your social media platforms demonstrating how oral cancer screenings are quick & painless.
  • Bring in your local dermatologist for a lunch n learn to demonstrate oral, head & neck cancer screenings.
  • Have a gift card or gift basket raffle that your patients can enter to win during the month of April.

Remember that when your patients are healthy – your practice is healthy.  For your patients to smile healthy they need to schedule the treatment you’ve diagnosed and to come in regularly for their hygiene continuing care appointments and oral cancer screenings.

June is Oral Health Month and Smile Month

A great month to encourage the community to share more smiles.

Theme: Cruise on in for Better Dental Health

Focus: Preventive Care (Cleanings, Sealants, and Fluoride for Adults and Children)

Goal: Raise awareness for the importance of preventive dental care (getting patients back on track with regular dental visits), take better care of your current patients, increase production, and bring in new patients.

Give-Away/Gift Idea: Drawing to win a Car Care Kit (Bucket filled with car care supplies.) Or team up with a local car wash or oil change shop for gift certificate donations. Have a drawing that your patients can enter a free car wash and/or oil change.

Example of Scripting:

Sealants: “A Tooth Without A Sealant is like a Car Without A Seat Belt” Dental Sealants Protect Your Teeth Against Decay and Cavities.

Gift Certificates – Remember to offer gift certificates for purchase. 

Community Engagement & Involvement Ideas ~

June is Perennial Gardening Month – Host a Summer Perennial Plant Exchange at your office. What a fantastic way to meet your neighbors! (It would be awesome to turn this into a “Beautify & Clean-Up” Local Businesses in the Community Event.)

Summer Reading Programs – Check with your local library to see if they are hosting any summer reading program incentives and offer to donate a prize(s). You can also design and print some fun bookmarks that include your office information.

Fun Community Gift Give-Away Idea – June 6th is Drive-In Movie Day – Put together a drive-in movie gift basket. (Fill it with candy, salty snacks, flashlight, bug spray, blanket, etc.) Have people comment on your Facebook page with the first movie they saw at the drive-in or what their favorite movie is to be entered for a chance to win the gift basket.

~ Educational Opportunites ~

National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month & National Headache Awareness Week: June 6th – 12th  / If it’s not your patient in the chair that suffers from migraines or headaches, it’s someone that they know. Great opportunity to share with them information about how you can help bring them or a friend some relief.

 Men’s Health Week: 14th – 20th  / Compared to women, men are less likely to visit a dentist, oftentimes, only seeing a dentist when a problem arises.  Share dental health tips for men on your website, and social media sites.

~ Social Media Post Ideas to Improve Engagement During the month of June ~

Great Outdoors Month – Print up a list of local parks, trails, camping sites, public pools/splash pads, kids outdoor activity ideas, etc. for your patients to take home and share with friends, family, co-workers & neighbors. Be sure to include your office contact information.  All month-long share this information on your social media pages.

Donut Day: 4th

Iced Tea Day: 10th

Corn on the Cob Day: 11th

First Day of Summer: 20th

International Body Piercing Day: 28th (share dangers of oral piercings)

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month – Your dental practice choosing to support Breast Cancer Awareness month is a great way to show your patients and the community that you care.

The way we celebrate may look a little different this year due to the safety precautions we’re taking in our practices however, there are still many ways to show your support.

First, make a plan. Work together as a team to decide how you will promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Here are a few areas to consider:

  • Raise Awareness, How?
  • Collect Donations for a charity, which foundation/charity will the donations go to?
  • Office Decorations, What? Who? and from Where?
  • Social Media Sites – Use to raise awareness, discuss dental health tips, share office happenings, and contest details, etc.
  • Production & Product Sales – (Portion of sales will be donated to… )
  • Contests
  • Give-aways – (ex: pink imprinted lip balm, little pumpkins, see more gift ideas here)
  • Special in office Event (ex: Pink Day)
  • Community – Get involved with a local BCA event(s)
  • Wear Pink and encourage your patients to wear pink
  • Involve your local news media with a press release
