Oral Cancer Awareness: Dental Office Tips & Strategies

Hello Friends,

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month and Oral, Head, and Neck Cancer Awareness Week is from the 14th to the 20th of April. This provides dental offices with an excellent opportunity to raise oral cancer awareness and the need for early detection to save lives.

Approximately 58,500 people in the US will be newly diagnosed with oral cancer in 2024. It will cause over 12,250 deaths, killing roughly 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day.  The death rate associated with this cancer is particularly high not because it is hard to discover or diagnose, but due to the cancer being routinely discovered late in its development.

While smoking and tobacco use are still major risk factors, the fastest-growing segment of oral cancer patients is young, healthy, nonsmoking individuals due to the connection to the HPV virus.

Dental Office Oral Cancer Awareness Strategies

Here are some Oral Cancer Awareness Tips and Ideas to get you started:

  • Hygiene Continuing Care Opportunity: Encourage your inactive (unscheduled) patients to come in for their important free oral cancer screening.
  • Partner with a local business to do free oral cancer screenings at their location.
  • Donate a portion of service/product sales (i.e., teeth whitening, fluoride, Invisalign) to Oral Cancer Research.
  • Give away Free T-shirts or Bracelets to every patient who makes a donation toward Oral Cancer Research or just because.
  • Create a video to share on your social media platforms demonstrating how oral cancer screenings are quick & painless.
  • Bring in your local dermatologist for a lunch and learn to demonstrate oral, head & neck cancer screenings.
  • Have a gift card or gift basket raffle that your patients can enter to win during April.

Remember that when your patients are healthy – your practice is healthy. For your patients to smile healthy they need to schedule the treatment you’ve diagnosed and to come in regularly for their hygiene continuing care appointments and oral cancer screenings.

Tip: Oral cancer screenings are not optional due to time constraints; they are an essential part of care and vital for every patient’s oral health. Always inform your patients before conducting an oral cancer screening. Let them know what you’re looking for and why.

March: A Key Month Worth Your Attention

March is a crucial month for focusing on productivity and patient well-being. Why is it so important? Well, because in six months, September will arrive, and for many, September tends to be a slower month for appointments. Let’s take proactive steps now to make September more successful this year. We know that the back-to-school season can sometimes result in more last-minute changes to the schedule so consider, scheduling more patients without school-aged children in late August to mid-September and parents toward the end of the month and beginning of October.

Same-Day Schedule Changes 

Holes in the schedule are not OK. Encourage your patients to keep their reservations and for the ones that absolutely must break their appt… unless they are a habitual offender PLEASE reschedule them while you have them on the phone.

When considering the cost of open chair time in a dental schedule, it’s essential to recognize the impact it can have on the overall efficiency and profitability of a dental practice. More importantly, the opportunity to help your patient smile healthier is lost.
